A Step-Mother’s Touch

He was a bit shy when we met, little Abe,

but it didn’t take long for him to warm up to me.

Wasn’t too educated. Couldn’t read a lick.

I taught him though,

and now you can’t find him without a book in his hand.

FOOTNOTE: Abe’s father remarried to Sarah Bush Johnston. She and Abe immediately became close. She taught Abraham to read.
