A Midwife’s Tale

It was close to night fall when my brother Abraham came to see me.

Said Tom Lincoln’s lady was havin’ a baby, and he needed my help.

Well..I ain’t no midwife, but I’ve watched mama enough times to know.

We got to the log cabin just in time. She was ready.

It was sunup when he came, a purty baby boy.

Why, you never saw a father more proud than Tom Lincoln.

Those chestnut oak walls housed one of God’s greatest gifts.

“This here boy is Abraham Lincoln.”

  • FOOTENOTE: Tom and Nancy Lincoln had their second child, their first son, Abraham Lincoln on February 12, 1809. He was named after Tom’s father.
